Después del castigo. Mujeres, encierro y retorno a la vida en libertad

Abstract

El presente trabajo indaga los efectos del encarcelamiento en el proceso de retorno a la vida en libertad de mujeres que han atravesado un período de prisión. Parte del reconocimiento de que la mayoría de las personas privadas de libertad eventualmente egresan del sistema penitenciario y que dicho reingreso se encuentra atravesado por múltiples tensiones, desafíos y condiciones estructurales que dificultan la reconstrucción de la vida en el medio libre. Desde un enfoque cualitativo y biográfico, la investigación recupera los relatos de mujeres que estuvieron privadas de libertad y que, al momento de las entrevistas, ya se encontraban en libertad. A partir del análisis de sus narrativas, se explora cómo la experiencia del encierro, marcada por procesos de prisionización, incide en sus vínculos sociales, cuerpos, subjetividades y prácticas, configurando su experiencia fuera de la prisión. Lejos de concebir la cárcel como un punto final, el trabajo la plantea como un punto de partida para reflexionar sobre los procesos de exclusión social y estigmatización, así como sobre las estrategias que estas mujeres despliegan en su reingreso a la vida en libertad. En este marco, se presta especial atención al momento del egreso como un umbral crítico, atravesado por tensiones entre las promesas institucionales y las condiciones concretas que enfrentan al recuperar la libertad. A lo largo de la tesis, se analiza cómo las instituciones penitenciarias reproducen estereotipos de género y configuran regímenes de control que moldean las identidades femeninas.

This study examines the effects of incarceration on the process of returning to life in freedom among women who have experienced a period of imprisonment. It starts from the recognition that most people deprived of their liberty eventually leave the penitentiary system, and that this reentry is shaped by multiple tensions, challenges, and structural conditions that hinder the reconstruction of life in the free world. From a qualitative and biographical approach, the research draws on the narratives of women who were formerly deprived of liberty and who, at the time of the interviews, were already living in freedom. Through the analysis of their accounts, the study explores how the experience of confinement—marked by processes of prisonization—affects their social ties, bodies, subjectivities, and practices, thereby shaping their experiences outside prison. Rather than conceiving prison as an endpoint, the study frames it as a starting point for reflecting on processes of social exclusion and stigmatization, as well as on the strategies these women deploy in their return to life in freedom. Within this framework, particular attention is paid to the moment of release as a critical threshold, marked by tensions between institutional promises and the concrete conditions women face upon regaining their freedom. Throughout the thesis, the analysis examines how penitentiary institutions reproduce gender stereotypes and configure regimes of control that shape feminine identities.
