Bienestar en terneros: evaluación del manejo ambiental

Abstract

Se compararon sistemas de crianza: tradicional (ST) y modificado (SM), para evaluar efectos en el bienestar de terneros Holstein lechales durante dos estaciones. En ambas, el SM mejoraba la movilidad y permitía la interacción social de los animales. Durante el invierno, que fue muy frío, los animales del SM se cubrían con capas. En el verano, no demasiado riguroso, todos tenían acceso a sombra. Se registraron los pesos iniciales y finales y el consumo semanal. Las diferencias se analizaron por comparación de medias. Se midieron la temperatura rectal, frecuencia cardíaca, respiratoria y cortisol en saliva (CS) en cuatro momentos del día. Los datos fueron analizados en parcelas divididas con medidas repetidas Las variables que mostraron fluctuaciones diarias se analizaron por el cosinor. Se registró el comportamiento y los datos se analizaron con la prueba del chi-cuadrado. En invierno, el efecto tratamiento fue altamente significativo para las variables fisiológicas (p<0,01), excepto el CS. En la estación cálida no se detectó efecto tratamiento. Los ritmos fueron variables. En ambas estaciones el efecto tratamiento fue significativo sobre el comportamiento (p<0,01). En el invierno la protección mejoró el bienestar de los terneros. En ambas estaciones el SM favoreció el comportamiento de la especie.

Rearing systems: traditional (ST) and modified (SM) were compared in order to evaluate effects in well-being conditions in Holstein calves during their suckling period. The SM enhanced mobility and allowed social interaction. During the winter season, a very cold one, animals in SM were protected with covers. In summer, a mild season, all animals had access to shade. Initial and final weights were recorded and feed intake was estimated weekly. The differences were analyzed by means comparisons. Rectal temperature, heart and respiratory frequencies and cortisol in saliva (CS) were determined during 4 different times within the day. Data were analyzed in a split plot design with repeated measurements. All variables showing significant daily fluctuations were subjected to cosinor analysis. Behavior was recorded, and data were analyzed by a chi-square test. In winter, treatment effects were highly significant for all physiological variables (p<0.01), except for CS. In summer, no treatment effects were detected. Rhythms were variable. Treatment effects were significant for behavior in both seasons (p<0.01). In winter, protection improved calf well-being. Behavior was favored by the SM in both seasons.
