Abstract

The present study delves into the relationship between the physical characteristics of the urban space and the occurrence of robberies and thefts in the Butantã Metro region in São Paulo, Brazil. Areas near public transport spots are strategic for urban mobility and development, but crime can pose an obstacle to the right to the city. This research work adopts a qualitative approach, analyzing two sectors with similar socioeconomic profiles but different crime levels. The study identifies factors such as the presence of potential targets, the appearance of the place, permeability, and security equipment as decisive features for urban safety. Furthermore, it highlights that urban transformations driven by the arrival of the metro have influenced the region’s socioeconomic and real estate dynamics. The results emphasize the need to integrate morphological and typological knowledge of the urban space into crime prevention programs, considering crime patterns and the impact that architecture has on security, especially in areas of public transportation.
