Silica aerogel stands out in civil construction as an innovative and advanced thermal insulator, featuring low thermal conductivity and high energy efficiency. Its application, however, remains limited due to its high production and distribution costs, which hinders its widespread adoption in South American countries. In this context, this study aims to review the literature on the use of silica aerogel in civil construction and its potential for thermal insulation in South American buildings, taking into account different climatic and economic variables. To this end, 13 scientific publications from the 21st century were analyzed after being selected from 29 findings in the main indexing portals. The selected studies contribute to the dissemination, experimentation, and discussion of the aforementioned material. Even though the presented studies and experiments on silica aerogel show its potential for reducing energy consumption in buildings, its broader implementation depends on cost reduction and further research to both explore new production techniques and contribute to the material’s adaptability to various climatic conditions.
