Abstract

There is currently a renewed interest in the relationship between economic fluctuations and strike movements, which refers to an article by Eric Hobsbawm (1984) and to an even older polemical text by Leon Trotsky (1984). This article offers a contribution to the growing literature, focusing, unlike most other studies, on a Third World country. It also reflects the growing influence of social history in Latin American research on the formation of the working class.
