https://bibliotecavirtual.unl.edu.ar/publicaciones/index.php/Topicos/article/view/13665

The present study examines dialectic in Plato's Republic in order to show that it continues to have strong points of contact with that practised in the earlier period, particularly in the relevance that elenchos retains as a necessary means of access to truth. The centrality of refutation in the Republic, it will be shown, is evident not only from the passages in which dialectic is theoretically characterised, but also from the exercise of dialectic that is evident throughout the text. In fact, as I propose, the whole dialogue proceeds on the basis of successive attempts to test and refute the positions defended by Socrates, who has to show his mettle and come through unscathed in the face of the attacks to which he is subjected by his interlocutors in a philosophical spirit.
Pilar Spangenberg
