Abstract

In the erotic doctrine of Antisthenes, the love of the teacher to his disciple is conditioned by his moral disposition, and it’s distinguished from platonic eroticism: while in Plato the beloved beauty in the individual is independent of him, in Antisthenes, beloved beauty is necessarily a particular disposition of the individual. If in Diotima’s discourse love should transcend the beauty of bodies, moral personality and institutions, in pursuit of the Idea of Beauty, in Antisthenes the ascent seems to stop in the peculiar virtues of the beloved individual.
