This essay reflects on some ideological aspects of the Roman society that are inherent in its political culture. We will begin by pointing out some ideas of the debate opened by Millar in 1984 when he set out the existence of democratic elements in the Roman Republic and we will mention some critics proposed by Hölkeskamp to the works of Millar in order to frame our reflections. In a second moment, we will focus on a reading of some passages of the book VI of Polybius’ Histories and the speech of Marius in Sallust’s The War with Jugurtha to form our reflection.
