Spatial analysis of urban expansion in smaller towns in the Luján River basin. The case of the San Andrés de Giles district (1990‒2020).

The study of urban dynamics, from a spatiotemporal approach, focuses on determining the advance of the urbanized surface and its impact on changes in land use. In the first instance, it is essential to have a diagnosis of the historical spatial evolution, which allows us to make contributions aimed at the quantification and analysis of urban growth. In this sense, the present work is based on the development of a geographic database, carried out from the use of geographic information systems and the visual interpretation of satellite images. Cartography of urban areas was developed for two time periods —1990 and 2020— and, using the cartographic superposition method, the urban expansion areas between each year were determined. In this way, it has been possible to quantify and map urban development in smaller towns in the Luján River basin.
