Implementación de índices de déficit hídrico para el monitoreo de sequías en El Salvador

Abstract

En Centroamérica, la sequía se relaciona con la distribución anómala de la precipitación dentro de la estación lluviosa. En El Salvador se denomina Canícula, y se presenta como una disminución importante en la precipitación durante varios días consecutivos en los meses de julio y agosto. Hoy en día, en El Salvador el monitoreo de la canícula se realiza identificando los días con ausencia de precipitación en los registros pluviométricos, y de este modo se establece la severidad de la sequía como el total de días contabilizados (Kattan et al., 2007). En esta Tesis se propone el uso de los índices: Índice de Precipitación Estandarizado (SPI), Índice de Condición de Humedad del Suelo (HSCI), Índice de Estrés Hídrico (EH) e Índice de Condición de Vegetación (VCI) para la caracterización espacial y temporal de la Canícula, utilizando la Precipitación (P), Humedad del suelo (HS), Evapotranspiración (ET) y el Índice de Diferencia Normalizada de Vegetación (NDVI). Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que a partir de los índices estudiados se puede estimar el inicio, intensidad e impacto de la Canícula.

In Central America, drought is related to the anomalous distribution of precipitation within the rainy season. In El Salvador, is called Canícula, and it appears as a significant decrease in precipitation during several consecutive days in the months of July and August. Nowadays, in El Salvador the monitoring of the canı́cula is carried out by identifying the days with absence of precipitation in the pluviometric records, and in this way the severity of the drought is established as the total number of days counted (Kattan et al., 2007). In this Thesis, it is proposed the use of the indices: Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Soil Moisture Condition Index (SMCI), Water Stress Index (WSI) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) for the spatial and temporal characterization of the Canı́cula using the Precipitation (P), Soil Moisture (SM), Evapotranspiration (ET) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The results showed that the onset, intensity and impact of the Canı́cula can be estimated from the studied indices.
