Abstract

I will consider the introductory section of Metaphysics Z 11 in its immediate context (conclusion of Z 10) with the aim of clarifying crucial aspects of the relation between form and matter, as they have a bearing on the next discussion of the thesis about definition, which is held by Young Socrates. I will argue that these passages endorse a purist view about the nature of forms, which can be better understood if we reject multiple realizability. I will finally suggest that all this helps to explain in that discussion which are the different definitional constraints proper to forms and compounds.
