Abstract

In his Science of Logic, Hegel rejects the axiomatic system for several reasons. In this article, I intend to study theses reasons and establish what can be learnt about the Logic in regard to this discussion with the axiomatic method. I will show that Hegel rejects the axiomatic method due to (1) the relative character of axioms; (2) the unidirectional character of its inference; (3) the limited character of the judgement; (4) the arbitrariness of its definitions and its assumption of the dichotomy form/content. This will show that the axiomatic method is inadequate for the Logic and that reason’s self-inquiry requires a multi-directional conditioning relation that avoids the infinite regress and allows thinking the absolute in a non-lineal way; besides, it will be shown the need of the syllogistic form and of assuming the con-determination of form and content.
