The present article seeks to elucidate the various senses in which Sextus Empiricus makes use of the “external objects” formula (in Greek, ta ektos hypokeimena) and other variants along his work. From the analysis of the arguments outlined by the Sceptic, it will be possible to identify, at least, four particular different senses for the expression in question. Furthermore, we will consider the background of this category in the precedent Greek philosophy and the problems it raises within the framework of the Pyrrhonian project of suspension of judgement or epochē, for whose resolution we will present, at last, an interpretation of the general sense of the term in the Sextian work.
