Spectator and World Awareness
An Approach to Arendt’s Concept of the Banality of Evil from the Characteristic of “remoteness from reality”

Arendt’s conception of the “banality of evil” is fundamentally characterized by thoughtlessness, but also by what she describes as a “remoteness from reality”. This second characteristic is mentioned but not developed by Arendt. This text shifts attention to the “remoteness from reality” and offers a proposal for the concept of “world awareness” as a means to prevent such remoteness. Drawing on Arendt’s notion of consciousness, and articulating her references to the world as the “common world” and the “world of appearances”, this reflection opens up the possibility of preventing evil through attentiveness to the surroundings from the perspective of the spectator who narrates, understands, and judges.
