Abstract

New parametric design technologies have begun to be used in architecture, in particular for exhibits or complex buildings without to clarify general strategies. This paper states general methodological conditions in order to apply parametric design in architecture, targeted to integrate technical features in the early steps of building project to improve its performance. It suggest this capacities like a field of design operations with general activities, a taxonomy of parameters and diverse techniques of building modeling, geometric programming, structural optimization, environmental simulation, genetic algorithm and digital manufacturing. It exposes three examples in different design phases; the initial exploration, middle development and final definition of elements. Corresponding to a façade of a medium-rise tower, arrangement of volumes and design of regular slabs. These experiences demonstrated integration of formal and technical features in the generation of design, with the conditions and techniques suggested. In order to promote the use of parametric design in wide architectural situations, to get a better behavior and consume of resources, as well as new aesthetic possibilities.
